BREASTFEEDING BUILDS BRIGHTER BRAINS We can't promise that breastfeeding will make your child a Nobel Prize winner, but research shows that babies who are breastfed are smarter when they get older.
BUILDING CLOSENESS BY BREASTFEEDING When women look back on the time they spent breastfeeding their babies, what they most remember is the closeness, the intimacy of feeding a baby at the breast. Whether you're someone who is swept away by the romance of motherhood or a more practical person who feels the milk is there for a reason, the feeling of satisfying your baby's hunger with your own milk will strike you as incredibly fulfilling.
How Breast Milk Protects Newborns Some of the molecules and cells in human milk actively help infants stave off infection. Doctors have long known that infants who are breast-fed contract fewer infections than do those who are given formula. Until fairly recently, most physicians presumed that breast-fed children fared better simply because milk supplied directly from the breast is free of bacteria. Formula, which must often be mixed with water and placed in bottles, can become contaminated easily. Yet even infants who receive sterilized formula suffer from more meningitis and infection of the gut, ear, respiratory tract and urinary tract than do breast-fed youngsters.
BREASTFEEDING WITH FLAT OR INVERTED NIPPLES
Babies breastfeed, not "nipple-feed", and if a baby is able to take in a good mouthful of breast, most types of inverted or flat nipples will not cause a problem during breastfeeding. However, some types of nipples are harder for the baby to latch onto, especially at first, but in most cases, patience, persistence, proper latch-on technique, and perhaps a few other helpful measures will pay off.
Breastfeeding the Baby with Gastroesophageal Reflux For most babies, spitting up is just part of a normal day's activities. "In a healthy baby," says LLL Medical Advisor Dr. Gregory White, "Spitting up is a laundry problem, not a medical problem." However, in an infant with the medical condition called gastroesophageal reflux (GER), spitting up may be frequent and painful.
The Vegan Diet During Pregnancy and Lactation Pregnancy is a time of increased nutritional needs, both to support the rapidly
growing fetus and to allow for the changes occurring in the pregnant woman's
body. Throughout pregnancy, recommended intakes of many vitamins and minerals
are higher than those recommended prior to pregnancy. For example, the
recommendation for folic acid is more than doubled and the recommendation for
calcium is 50% higher during pregnancy.
