Aimingatmoms Resource Page: Adolescence

Oh boy, I am not there yet with my children. I do remember my adolescence and it wasn't that pretty.

"Adolescence" spans the age of roughly nine to seventeen - the second and third thirds of a child's life. And it is a label we cannot treat so lightly for it is probably, potentially the time of the child's greatest confusion and therefore suffering. The psychologists define this time as beginning with puberty and eding withthe attainment of pysiological or psychological maturity. One might say therefore that many people are in a permanent state of adolescence. Puberty, in turn is defined as the time when the sex organs become reproductively functional.

And in a sense, this third third of the child's life is akin to the present age of the whole world, for we are in the Age of Information right now. The advent of the communications revolution, the computer, the telephone, television and all the other advanced systems of linking up the globe into one network extension of mankind and womankind. This could be thought of as the planet's teen-age period. We haven't yet reached our maturity and so should understand most clearly how it is to be a growing child about to enter what is so dearly and apprehensively termed adulthood.
